Toyota Cheetahs vs Ulster EPCR-duel afgelast na uitzonderlijke inspanningen om wedstrijd door te laten gaan

Wat begon als een nieuwjaarsreis vanuit het zonovergoten Bloemfontein, eindigde in een uitzonderlijke gezamenlijke inspanning van CEO’s, coaches, spelers, vrijwilligers en trouwe rugbyliefhebbers die bij temperaturen onder het vriespunt sneeuw stonden te scheppen, in een ultieme poging om het EPCR Challenge Cup-duel tussen de Toyota Cheetahs en Ulster Rugby alsnog mogelijk te maken.

Ondanks de enorme inzet van alle betrokken partijen werd de langverwachte wedstrijd, gepland voor 11 januari, officieel afgelast nadat het speelveld als onbespeelbaar en onveilig werd beoordeeld voor spelers en officials.

Na uitzonderlijk zware weersomstandigheden en een door de gemeente Amsterdam opgelegde opschorting van alle buitensportevenementen, werd uitgeweken naar een alternatieve speellocatie. Ondanks uitgebreide inspanningen om daar een bespeelbaar veld te realiseren, oordeelde de scheidsrechter dat het veld door de aanhoudende vorst niet veilig was.

De wedstrijd had vanaf het begin veel belangstelling gewekt:

• Vrijdag 2 januari: de wedstrijd was uitverkocht, tien dagen voor de aftrap
• Vrijdag 9 januari: bekendmaking van verplaatsing vanwege extreme weersomstandigheden en een door de gemeente opgelegde stop op buitensporten in Amsterdam; veiligheid van spelers en officials stond voorop. Besluit om de wedstrijd zonder publiek te spelen bij Dukes Rugby in ’s-Hertogenbosch
• Vrijdag 9 januari: verplaatsing van alle wedstrijddaglogistiek van Amsterdam naar ’s-Hertogenbosch
• Zaterdag 10 januari: Dukes Rugby Club deed een oproep aan vrijwilligers voor ondersteuning
• Zondag 11 januari: na een veldinspectie door de scheidsrechter, één uur voor de aftrap en met als doel maximale tijd te creëren om het veld speelklaar te maken, werd besloten dat het veld niet veilig was. De wedstrijd werd uitgesteld
• Zondag 11 januari (22.45 uur): officiële bevestiging dat de wedstrijd definitief werd afgelast
• Conform de EPCR-reglementen en alle omstandigheden in acht genomen, is het de verantwoordelijkheid van de organiserende club om ervoor te zorgen dat een wedstrijd doorgang kan vinden. De wedstrijd werd daarom administratief vastgelegd als een 0–28 overwinning (met vier-try bonuspunt) voor Ulster Rugby
• EPCR sprak haar waardering uit voor de uitzonderlijke inspanningen van de Toyota Cheetahs en Rugby Nederland om de wedstrijd toch te laten plaatsvinden en bedankte alle betrokkenen voor hun inzet

De Toyota Cheetahs spreken een bijzonder woord van dank uit aan Dukes Rugby Club en haar indrukwekkende gemeenschap, die zich in ware rugbygeest heeft verenigd. Vrijwilligers hebben het hele weekend sneeuw van het veld geschept in de hoop de wedstrijd op hun eigen terrein te kunnen spelen.

Clubvoorzitter Robert van Schayk nam het voortouw in deze oproep en leidde een indrukwekkende operatie die de kernwaarden van rugby perfect weerspiegelde.

Ook Rugby Nederland verdient grote erkenning en waardering. De organisatie wist het stadion al op 2 januari uit te verkopen en heeft maandenlang onvermoeibaar gewerkt aan de organisatie van de twee thuiswedstrijden van de Toyota Cheetahs. Een oprechte dank aan Erik Bosman, Yoran Stroop, Mariëlle ten Rouwelaar en het volledige team van Rugby Nederland voor hun toewijding, professionaliteit en niet-aflatende inzet.

“Geen enkele inspanning in het leven is ooit tevergeefs. Elke situatie heeft een reden en een les, ook al zien we die soms pas wanneer we terugkijken,” aldus Rory Duncan, CEO van Free State Cheetahs (Pty) Ltd.

Uiteindelijk lag de beslissing om de wedstrijd af te gelasten buiten de invloed van de rugbyorganisaties. De gemeente Amsterdam schortte alle sportevenementen op uit veiligheidsoverwegingen, waardoor organisatoren nauwelijks alternatieven hadden. De uitzonderlijke weersomstandigheden zorgden er bovendien voor dat ook de alternatieve locatie niet over een bespeelbaar veld beschikte. De scheidsrechter, Kevin Bralley, nam conform de geldende reglementen en veiligheidsprotocollen de definitieve beslissing om de wedstrijd af te gelasten, nadat alle mogelijke tijd was benut om het veld speelklaar te maken. De veiligheid van spelers en officials staat altijd voorop bij de uitvoering van EPCR-wedstrijden. De Cheetahs danken EPCR voor het bieden van elke mogelijke gelegenheid om de wedstrijd alsnog te spelen.

Hoewel de strijd tegen de elementen werd verloren, bleef de kracht van de rugbygemeenschap overeind. De gezamenlijke inzet, saamhorigheid en passie vormden een krachtige herinnering aan waar rugby voor staat: veerkracht, teamwork en onvoorwaardelijke betrokkenheid.

Toyota Cheetahs vs Ulster EPCR Clash Cancelled After Extraordinary Efforts to Stage Fixture

What began as a New Year’s journey from a blazing Bloemfontein ended with CEOs, coaches, players, volunteers, and die-hard rugby enthusiasts shovelling snow in sub-zero conditions in an extraordinary attempt to salvage the Toyota Cheetahs’ EPCR Challenge Cup clash against Ulster.

Despite immense efforts from all parties involved, the much-anticipated fixture scheduled for 11 January was officially cancelled after the pitch was deemed unplayable and unsafe for players and officials.

Following exceptional severe weather and a municipality-mandated suspension of all outdoor sporting events in Amsterdam leading to securing an alternative venue, and despite the extensive efforts across the board to deliver a playable surface, the referee deemed the pitch unsafe due to the freezing conditions.

The match had captured significant interest from the outset:

• Friday, 2 January: The fixture sold out, ten days before kick-off
• Friday, 9 January: Relocation announcement issued due to adverse weather conditions leading to municipality-mandated suspension of outdoor sporting events in Amsterdam, with player and match officials’ safety taking precedence, game to be played behind closed doors at Dukes Rugby, ’s-Hertogenbosch
• Friday, 9 January: Relocations of game day logistics from Amsterdam to ’s-Hertogenbosch
• Saturday, 10 January: Dukes Rugby Club issued a call to action for volunteer assistance
• Sunday, 11 January: Following a pitch inspection by the match referee one hour before kick-off, in order to maximise the time in which the pitch could be prepared, he decided that the pitch was not safe to play on, with player and match official safety being prioritised. The game was postponed until further notice
• Sunday, 11 January (22:45): Official notice that the game was cancelled
• Pursuant to EPCR regulations, and all factors considered, it is the hosting club’s responsibility to ensure the match can go ahead; therefore, the match result was recorded as a 0–28 four-try bonus point win for Ulster Rugby
• EPCR acknowledged the incredible efforts by the Toyota Cheetahs and Rugby Nederland to ensure the fixture could take place and thanked all parties for their support

The Toyota Cheetahs offer a special word of thanks to Dukes Rugby Club and its remarkable community, who rallied together in true rugby spirit. Volunteers worked across the weekend shovelling snow from the pitch in the hope of hosting the match on their home ground.

Club President Robert van Schayk led the call to action and expertly project-managed an outstanding operation that exemplified the game’s values.

Recognition and great appreciation must also go to Rugby Nederland, who successfully sold out the stadium by 2 January and worked tirelessly for months to host the Toyota Cheetahs’ two home fixtures. A heartfelt thank you to Erik Bosman, Yoran Stroop, Marielle ten Rouwelaar, and the entire team at Rugby Nederland for their commitment, professionalism and unwavering support.

“No effort in life is ever wasted. Every situation holds a reason and a lesson, even if we only see it clearly when we look back,” said Rory Duncan, CEO of the Free State Cheetahs (Pty) Ltd.

Ultimately, the decision to cancel the match was taken out of rugby’s hands. The Municipality of Amsterdam suspended all sporting events for public safety reasons, leaving organisers with few viable alternatives, and the unprecedented extreme weather conditions led to the alternative venue also being without a playable pitch. The match referee, Kevin Bralley, in line with regulations and safety protocols, made the final call to cancel the fixture after allowing as much time as possible to secure the playability of the pitch. Player and match official safety is paramount in the delivery of EPCR fixtures. The Cheetahs would like to thank EPCR for giving every opportunity to get the match played.

While the battle against the elements was lost, the rugby community’s effort, unity and passion stood as a powerful reminder of what the sport represents: resilience, teamwork and unwavering commitment.
