Rugby Nederland behartigt de belangen van ongeveer 16.000 leden en een kleine 100 erkende rugbyclubs. De bond ondergaat een positieve groei bij zowel de jeugd, in de participatiesport, als in de topsport. Het topsport pathway werpt steeds meer zijn vruchten af en is na de start van de Rugby Academy’s en het NTC-programma aanzienlijk in omvang gegroeid. Daarnaast zijn er steeds meer brede verenigingen met zowel aanbod voor jeugd, dames als heren en daarbij begint rugby zich langzaam ook te ontwikkelen op andere vlakken. Eén van onze sterkste krachten is dan ook de inzet van vele enthousiaste mensen die zich inzetten voor Rugby Nederland.
Rugby Nederland is the Dutch rugby union and represented in international rugby union competitions. For its Senior Men XV, Rugby Nederland is looking for a Head Coach.
Dutch rugby is developing rapidly. A broad academy system with six Rugby Academies spread over the country, has been developed since 2010 and the competitive results of Dutch rugby have improved over recent years because of that. Rugby Nederland expects to further benefit from the claiming investments made in the academy structure by gradually improving the results in the Rugby Europe Championship with a view to a top 3 position structurally.
Under a recently appointed Technical Director, Rugby Nederland is looking to continue the development of a strong basis for its high-performance programs by ensuring the pathway from academies to senior representative teams becomes a continuum in which young players are developed into the internationals of the future. The structure is player-focused and will drive the development of a strong culture that harnesses the values the Game and strengthens the reputation of Dutch rugby.
Role
- You will be responsible for leading the Senior Men XV team (Team), players and staff with a view to maximising performance in all aspects of the game.
- You will assist in the implementation and development of a high-performance structure that will strive to provide the best environment for players to grow and reach their full potential as individuals and as members of the Team.
- You are expected to provide guidance and expertise to the Technical Directors and/or Head coaches of Rugby Nederland’s development teams, top clubs and academies in the identification and development of talent towards the high-performance pathways and programmes.
- As one of the leaders in the Union, you will also support the Training and Education department of Rugby Nederland in the growth and development of coaches and referees.
- You will report to the Technical Director. Your direct reports are the Senior Men XV staff.
Responsibilities
Leadership:
- Establish a vision for the team including team values that are aligned with Rugby Nederland Vision, Mission and Values.
- Ensure that all members of the Team understand and adopt the mission and values.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships using a variety of styles adapted to the situation.
- Always demonstrate the highest degree of credibility, honesty and integrity.
- Show competency in the understanding and comply with the relevant competition, organisation and cultural standards, policies and regulations.
Management and Planning:
- Lead the design and implementation of the Team’s coaching plan, including periodised content that covers pre-season, in-season and post-season objectives and performance indicators.
- Oversee the design and implementation of coaching strategies and delegate responsibility and accountability in other members of the coaching staff in specific specialisation areas.
- In partnership with the Athletic Performance staff, develop a training schedule and match day preparation programme to maximise team performance.
- Liaise with the Head of Athletic Performance to ensure alignment with physical preparation and coaching strategies.
- Liaise with the Head Coaches of Rugby Nederland development teams to ensure alignment with player pathways, player availability, talent identification and coaching framework.
- Report together with the Head of Athletic Performance the performance and wellbeing of the players to their respective clubs following the appropriate lines of communication.
Coaching:
- Ensure that the tactical and technical strategies are aligned with Rugby Nederland identity, developing a Dutch style of rugby.
- Measure team performance against key performance indicators outlined and agreed at the start of each training phase.
- Oversee the development of players in partnership with assistant coaches.
- Stay updated with the latest trends in the Game, seeking opportunities to learn and grow professionally.
Squad Selection:
- Lead the selection of the Team throughout Rugby Europe Championship and any other match the Team will play in consultation with the Technical Director and the Assistant Coaches.
- Adhere to Rugby Nederland’s internal regulation and policies in the selection of players.
- Watch regularly either in person or on remote Rugby Nederland domestic competition putting a special focus in the performance of eligible players.
- Watch regularly either in person or on remote the games of Rugby Nederland eligible players that are playing overseas, with special focus in their performance and readiness to be part of the Team.
- Work in partnership with the Technical Director on identifying, developing and securing the best available talent for the Team.
- Maintain discretion and confidentiality relating to selection matters, including discussions with players about their performance and not making any promises or guarantees of selection or compensation either monetary or in kind to any player, at all times including before, during and after the Rugby Europe Championship or any other World Rugby or Rugby Europe competition or test match.
Stakeholder Relations:
- Provide advice, input and data to Rugby Nederland’s clubs and overseas clubs on the development, performance and physical condition of selected players as requested.
- Build relationships with Coaches and Academies, sharing individual knowledge and experience to assist in the development of coaching and identification of emerging players throughout The Netherlands as well as eligible players either in The Netherlands or overseas.
- Maintain sound, professional working relationships with Match Officials and World Rugby and Rugby Europe officials.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years working experience as a Head Coach in a high-performance environment.
- Minimum of 2 years working experience at international level, either in a National Team or in a professional club participating in international events.
- Minimum World Rugby Level 3 coach accreditation (or equivalent).
- Proven ability to lead and manage diverse teams and individuals effectively in a high-pressure environment.
- Demonstrable track record in high performance athletic development and working with performance technology (video analysis platforms, providing effective (digital) feedback).
- Proven ability to create, develop and maintain a vision, establish buy-in, execute and drive performance to achieve a desired target.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, Dutch and/or French seen as a bonus.
- Willingness to spend sufficient time in the Netherlands required during the Team’s season (including travel) and to attend necessary activities s meetings, educational events and/or commercial activities.
- Current place of residence in Europe.

Rugby is nog steeds groeiende, maar de groei is niet gelijk verdeeld binnen Nederland en per spelersgroep. Iedere regio kent een andere cultuur, samenwerking tussen clubs en uitdagingen. De regiocoördinatoren spelen een belangrijke rol bij het stimuleren en ondersteunen van de groei door samenwerking tussen de verenigingen onderling te stimuleren, en kennis, beleid en ervaringen tussen Rugby Nederland landelijk en regionaal uit te wisselen. Voor district Zuid zoeken we nog een coördinator die de clubs de nodige ondersteuning kunnen bieden om verder te ontwikkelen. Daarnaast zoeken we ook nog een coördinator voor district Oost.
Hoofdtaak
Het stimuleren van de rugbysport in de breedste zin op regionaal niveau. Clubs in het district met elkaar in contact brengen en samenwerking binnen het district stimuleren en begeleiden. Regionale en landelijke initiatieven bij elkaar brengen.
- Heeft een visie op de ontwikkeling van rugby binnen de regio die aansluit op de visie van Rugby Nederland.
- Is in staat samenwerking binnen de regio te stimuleren en gezamenlijke doelen op te stellen
- Ziet toe op de uitvoering en evaluatie van de onderling afgestemde doelen en de communicatie hierover.
- Coördineert bijeenkomsten voor clubs binnen regio (4 keer per jaar)
- Stimuleert opleidingen in regio
- Functioneert als ‘vraagbaak’ en ‘wegwijzer’ binnen de regio voor clubs
- Sluit periodiek aan bij het District Jeugd Overleg (DJO)
- Houdt contact met clubs en commissies om de uitvoering van het beleid binnen de regio af te stemmen
- Vertegenwoordigt een brugfunctie tussen Rugby Nederland en de clubs in de regio.
